Valei is excited about our new Valei Vendor Network Series, 5 Questions in 5 Minutes. Valei has started to assist and mentor small business’, to create enhanced and more meaningful networking opportunities here in the desert to connect business’ to each other and encourage them to network and grow together. These short interviews are designed to help our Valei Vendors learn and grow.

As a long time successful business owner here in the desert we are honored to share our “5Q in 5Min” with Mr. Steve Fleischman of Desert Freight Services:

How did the idea for your business come about?
After managing a small parcel business, I realized many people needed to ship larger items (too big for ground UPS/FedEx) and no service available to assist for this type of shipment. Then after years, comes the knowledge and expansion capabilities. After 30 years we have grown 350%. But still small and manageable.
How do you find people to bring into your organization that truly care about the organization the way you do?
Time/Patience and Knowledge. Growing organically has been key. Allow for personal growth (personal knowledge base) so you know what your real needs are, while attracting in time, key personnel.
What would you say are the top three skills/traits needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Verbal skills. Knowledge. Humility. Must have good email skills. Always fill in subject line and keep to one email.
How do you build a successful customer base – how do you market to your clients?
Tried the salesperson approach, not effective. Now… in todays world – reviews, ratings, and word of mouth. So with Google Ad words, and a 5 star Yelp rating they come to me. Marketing…Google Adwords as 90% of our customers are one time. Growing a 10% customer base means, offering forwarding services, acting as a freight forwarder broker and consult with local businesses. Cost effective for them and no additional costs to us, though profit is minimal and less than 10% of gross sales.
What’s your superpower or aspiring superpower?

Being able to read people over the phone in 1 minute or less; their needs, temperament, spending perimeters.
